GUEST LECTURE—17th Sept 2010
WHAT FREEDOM MEANS FOR THE PEOPLE OF KASHMIR
This week JIMMC students were nourished with the knowledge and splendor (splendour)
of Mr. Sheshnarain Singh ,an eminent journalist . He shared his views on the burning issue of “Freedom and Kashmiri people”. He ignited the lecture with the history of Kashmir which described how J&K came into existence when the Mughal emperor Akbar invaded Kashmir in 1586 defeating the Turk ruler Yusuf Khan and gradually the
Take over by Raja Harisingh who ascended the throne of Kashmir in 1925 and eventually
The partition and dispute which started when British suzerainty ended over Indian princely states and Kashmir remained with Muslim majority and a Hindu Raja. Amidst such complicated political situations the fact remains … what people of Kashmir want?
The freedom to be with India or Pakistan ? or the freedom to breathe in emancipated air
Of peace and love. Today a Kashmiri be it Hindu or Muslim wants to live and cherish this beautiful creation of God. Perfection beyond this world makes Kashmir a paradise.
The land of sparkling rivers and sleepy lakes ,of startling gardens and regal chinar trees,
A heaven on this earth is a centre of militancy today.
Let the people of Kashmir bask in the glory of this earthly heaven. They don’t know
Article 370, they are unaware of “Amritsar Treaty” what they know is humanity.
They want to live and let live and heal the wounds of bitterness between various nations
Who claim to be fighting for their cause? To sum up the speaker’s viewpoint it is appropriate to quote few lines by Zafar on the behalf of Kashmiri people:
“I want to shatter the bars of my cage
With the fluttering of my wings”
Let the cage break and birds take their flight. Amen!!!!
10TH SEPT 2010.
Students at JIMMC were mesmerized with the enlightening lecture “DANCING FOR THE NATION” by Ms. Arshiya Sethi who is a known dance
critic. She is actively involved in establishment of various cultural societies in India
and abroad. She is working towards the mission of making India a superpower through our vast cultural heritage which is a USP of our country vis-à-vis the entire world.
The lecture was beautifully sequenced starting with the origin of culture, its importance in the Indian context, role of dance in culture, subcultures and finally the amalgamation of all of it with the central theme of “Unity in Diversity”. Ms. Arshiya provided some important facts and figures on the origin of various classical dance forms in India and how it was subsequently accepted by the masses. But her main thrust was that “Diversity prevails only when uniqueness is preserved”.
This was explained citing the example of “Sattriya” and other dance forms which have their own unique features and presentation styles but if we try to mould their basic beauty within the set parameters then the uniqueness is lost. Similarly, in a nation like India with such diverse variety of culture, cuisine, clothing weather, language, religion etc., existence of each has to be respected and accepted. It is this variety which provides a breathtaking ensemble for experiences that is uniquely Indian. With her skilled oratory Ms.Arshiya urged the students that Indian culture is also about respecting elders, honouring heroes and cherished love. It is a land of aspirations, achievements and self- reliance. Indian culture has a very high level of tolerance. It even absorbed the culture of invaders & marauders who invaded our land centuries ago.
So why is it that within the nation we do not respect each one’s uniqueness and dance ahead towards progress and prosperity?
India is the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother
