RTV entrance: Easy...no, difficult...oh no...

I am the least qualified to offer tips to aspirants, for my name figured on the waiting list and I could eventually make it only after somebody worthier opted out. But Ritesh ji has been threatening to ex-communicate me from IIMCAA, and hence the meek capitulation.

I think sailing through IIMC is both easy and difficult at the same time. Easy because it does not really require any preparation. And difficult because of the criminal demand-supply gap vis-à-vis seats on offer--35 (during my batch i.e. 2005-06).

If you want to be in the business of communication, you need to figure out what you have to say and say it effectively.

Try to gather information (read) on national and and international issues/controversies and contextualise them, give them a perspective.

Take a stand, howsoever "politically incorrect" it may be, and make sure you have the moral courage and intellectual wherewithal to justify it. For example, if you believe reservation policy is futile, or India was right in voting in favour of a UN resolution against Iran, say so. The idea is to come across as an independent thinker.

Sound knowledge base and an effective use of language as a tool will do the trick.

Please do not fall in love with any question. You may feel tempted to write endlessly on a certain question, but exercise restraint. You have to answer many questions.

Be consistent in terms of content, length and language of your answers.

Some issues worth looking at:
Recent developments in Nepal and Pakistan and the consequent impact on India's bilateral relations with them. For example, Maoists in Nepal have already made their intentions clear by asserting that they would scrap all previous pacts with India and renegotiate them afresh.
Chinese government's crackdown on pro-independence protests in Lhasa. You can link it with the 1989 pro-democracy students protests on Tiananmen Square, where Chinese military tanks crushed thousands of college-goers.

Bhutan election--an exemplary initiative to shift from monarchy to democracy, peacefully and voluntarily. You can contrast the event with Nepal's former King Gyanendra who doggedly refused to abdicate the thrown before he was upstaged by a pro-democracy movement spearheaded by the Maoists.

A broad overview of the newest version of cricket, that is, T20 (IPL) (Do you think it's "McDonaldisation" of the game?.
Evaluate other pros and cons and try to bring in the Bhajji-Sreesanth "slap saga", besides the question of desirability of cheerleaders in the game.
Special Economic Zones..Their desirability..land grab or engine of economic growth?

Inflation and global food shortage..reasons..(Yes, us Indians and the Chinese!!..billions of mouths to be fed here, export bans by these nations..leading to a food supply crunch..rising crude oil prices..diversion of food grain (maize) by the US and Europe for bio-fuel production..)

Indo-US nuclear deal (People have whined, talked, written about it ad-nauseum..but it continues to be the most challenging foreign policy decision for India).

Also, try and form an understanding of how TV news media is functioning, its content, presentation and priorities. do you see it trivialising news, and in the process, undermining democracy, dumbing you down? Is it suspending your conscience, your thought process, either by sensationalism, or by upping the glamour quotient? You would also do well to analyse a few TV serials, soap operas and see what values they are propagating...how regressive or progressive they are..
Finally, see if you can read the last few editions of frontline, it's a fortnightly magazine and pratiyogita darpan. And of course, newspaper edits are a must...

A reposeful and inviting IIMC is looking forward to having you as its students!!!

Preparing for Radio & Television Journalism...

For all the aspirants who want to be a Radio and Television Journalist:
Preparation: Well, the first thing, which I heard on my first day of IIMc's Radio and TV journalism class, was: Since you have made it here, you guys are already half journalists. Well I know all of you reading it might feel pumped-up after all it's a great compliment to start your journalism career with.

But, now as a journalist please read the finer point, that also means you possess what a journalist should possess, a lot of knowledge about every important happenings in the world. So you must be a regular newspaper reader, and hear I don't mean a film-section reader. You must know what has happened in the world in the last one year. So some of the sections you should take of in your general awareness is:

1) General and Political News of India. Remember the Nuclear deal and left stuff, Mayawati, etc.
2) Sports: Sports news India and international: major focus is on Cricket, Hockey, Tennis, and Badminton. Olympics coming up in China are huge.
3) Business Developments: Here business personalities are important. Know; also share market things, Governmental financial institutions.
4) International Politics and Conflicts: Middle east Pakistan American European Union Russia; know what major things happened in these reasons. This is another area where a lot of questions are asked. So, you should be aware of the latest in the world in the last one year, like Pakistan happenings, India's relation with major countries of the world.
5) Historical Events or Facts: Be prepared as some questions could be of general natural, what we called static general awareness, not the dynamic GK of the last one years. Those who have been good with their social studies papers can smile.

Once, you are confident of your knowledge, make sure you have a sharp brain to be able to co-relate events and always present a larger picture of a story, which you might be asked to explain as it shows your rounded awareness of the subject.

During Exam: You are confident of your preparations, but it can be marred if you don't take care of the time limits. A lot of writing is involved and remember its on topics you hardly write regularly even if you know. The questions are very much similar for all the three journalism courses, only in RTV questions they check for the succinctness of your language, directness of your reply, so no beating around the bush, though it happens a lot on TV, also try to picture your story use figurative words, easy words and lot of information in your answers. Write in the word limit not because your marks will be deducted if you write more but you might get exhausted thinking of too many points in one answer and wouldn't the same standard for other answers. Also you might leave some questions unanswered, so very strictly take care of the time limits. Questions are there to check your general knowledge of the subject not the expert knowledge write as much as you know, not think of smart points.

Interview: So, following my expert advice you have cracked-past the written, well many congratulations for that, but its work half-done to sail through to the hallowed gates of IIMC. You need to get past interview as well.

For Radio and TV there is no group discussion generally, but be prepared in case there is one as a TV journalist should always be ready for the unknown. In place of GD there is a one minute speaking in front of camera, you will face it there before you do it in a channel yes. So, there you need to show your restraint, flow of language, calmness of your posture, no visible tension, have a still posture during the camera interaction, also don't think in between speaking, think then start your speech. Try not to stop in middle that can happen and here your control over self comes in play, remember a panel of five people are watching your speech in a connected room. And once you through with your first camera session, you face the interview panel (see the visual image I am presenting follow it in your writing as you will sail) there try being calm confident, they will ask you questions on your camera presentation, then the genera questions on your area of interest, never mention you read lot of books they will grill you to pieces, so remember the are you choose for interest. Also, your general awareness will always come in handy for the interview.

Then What: Wait for the results you have done your best. If you were good in your precise pictorial and flowing writings with easy words as is required in television, you had a good on camera presentations, you did your interviews well, you will sail through, the IIMC RTV paper, the class room is on the first floor and it opens up to the front gardens of the institute, where you will shoot your first television stories fighting for the camera and mikes and of course the attentions of your lovely female or male class mates as per the gender requirements.
For those of you who couldn't make well hard luck, but if you have a journalist inside, never give-up like journalist follow-up on your dream, and you might reach your source that is IIMC next year.

Tips to crack the entrance examination for Advertising & PR

Firstly, let me honestly clear some myths about the exam.
It is an exam where last minute preparation doesn't really help you. So if you think that you read all the newspapers, magazines and get through, chances are slim of you getting through.
Please start reading brand related articles in magazine, newspapers and internet as early as you can.
Secondly, the examination is not only about advertisements and which ones you like/ dislike.
You would be expected to know has been the impact of advertisements on consumers; what could have been the thinking behind making an ad like that etc.
And also a bit about the happenings in the business world.

Now to the main things to keep in mind for the test –
The total number of marks which you all will be fighting for is 100 marks.
85 marks are for the written examination and the rest 15 for the GD (Group Discussion) and Interview.
So it becomes essential that you do extremely well in the written so that your chances are brighter to get through.
The written and the GD/ Interview are not mutually exclusive.

The written examination is for 2 hours; hence the time you have is extremely limited. The questions are subjective, so needs you to think and have a point of view.

Please do not write very long answers questions because you will not be able to finish the exam in time.
Try to finish the all the questions first and then come back to any question you feel needs more explanation.

The GD/ Interview is taken by senior advertising and marketing professionals, so please be careful in which way you articulate yourself.
The topic for the GD would be related to current affairs or advertising.

The interview can go to any dimension depending upon your academic qualifications and hobbies/ activities you are active in.

There is not much stress on previous academic records so chill if you do to have great marks!

Last but not the least; be confident of what you are and if you are good you will get definitely get through.
Best of Luck !!!

Getting through to English Journalism Entrance test...

Make sure you are well-read on current affairs. That includes politics, finance, sports, entertainment, etc.
The test involves lots of essay type questions on a variety of topics. These are subjective questions and could be best tackled when you have been following the news carefully in the previous year.

The test is for 85 marks and there are a lot of long answers to be written. A big number of questions have to be attempted hence ration your examination time in such a way that you can answer the maximum number of questions as quickly as possible. There may be no time to go back to revise your answers.

Questions come in options. Normally each question is a set of three questions, from which you have to attempt only one.

Don't waste time thinking over answers. It's an awfully long paper. If you can't answer a question, quickly move on to the next one.

There are also some non-current affair questions. Example, you may be asked to describe your journey from your home to the exam centre.

There are some short questions as well. Example, "Why has Arjun Singh been in the news lately?" Such questions can be answered in one or two sentences.

Write in clear, concise English. Verbal gymnastics may not be rewarding as much as a simple, straightforward sentence.

Preparing for this test
Read as much as you can on news and current affairs. It is necessary to know not only what is happening in the world, but why it is happening. You need not be an expert on these issues, but it is necessary to have a basic understanding of current affairs.

Read at least two good English dailies, preferably national newspapers. Do not miss the edit pages. Also supplement this reading with weekly news magazines such as Outlook, India Today, etc. Read other magazines, depending on your interest – Cricinfo, Filmfare, Businessweek, or even Maxim. There's no limit to what you should read.

Tap into alternate journalism on the web. There are excellent blogs on any given topic. Often, they provide better analysis of news than newspapers themselves because blogs are run by independent writers. Reading such blogs will help you understand news better and to form opinion based on solid understanding.

Don't undermine what you know. All knowledge counts. You may not be as interested in politics as you are in cricket or films. If so, read on cricket or films to your heart's content without worrying that it is "non-serious" reading. It is necessary to develop your own strengths since journalism can be richly rewarding for specialists.

Group Discussion and Interview
Prepare for the GD just like you prepared for the written test. The topics would be around current affairs.

For the interview, be yourself. Speak clearly, speak your mind.

Search the internet for sample interview questions. Prepare for the basic questions too. You need to know clearly why you have applied for the course, why you want to be a journalist, etc. Have a good understanding of your life's successes and failures, ups and downs, strengths and weaknesses.

Stressing on other alternatives of fuel, Mr. Sharma said unconventinal hydrocarbon, a new option, would have to be explored. He said the share of oil would come down and that of the natural gas would go up in the next five years.
Talking about india's oil demand, the summit report stated that the long term growth in demand of petroleum products depends upon economic growth, elasticity of demand of petroleum products with respect to GDP growth, relative price levels of substitute products like LNG/ CNG, saturation of LPG demand and the impact of energy conservation measures.
India needs to grow its energy share in a market with sluggish growth in supply and rising prices, and its share of world supply of fossil fuel would rise from 3.7 to 7.6 percent.
